UAPB alumnus gives $300,000 for Vesper Choir endowment

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Before the Christmas season began, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir received a very special gift.

The university received a $300,000 donation to establish the John E. Smith and Charlene Smith-Gaines Vesper Choir Fund. Donated by Mr. John E. Smith, a 1961 graduate of AM&N College (now UAPB), the fund will assist in taking the choir to all corners of the state of Arkansas and the nation through a variety of outreach activities.

“We are very much grateful for the incredible generosity of Mr. John E. Smith,” UAPB Chancellor Dr. Laurence B. Alexander said. “His remarkable contribution will have a profound and sustained impact on our university and, more specifically, our internationally-renowned Vesper Choir through the establishment of the fund.”

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The union of the late Herbert and Marether Herts resulted in an appreciation and support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

Although neither of them attended UAPB, they both came from small towns in the South and understood the importance of being able to extend an opportunity to those that came behind them. Having passed away in 1992 and 2013 respectively, their estate bequeathed $207,643.95 to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to establish the Herbert, Marether and George Herts Scholarship.

JCSO recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

JCSO recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - For the month of October, deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will be writing citations in pink ink as a way to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Additionally, their female deputies have been provided pink handcuffs in lieu of the traditional stainless steel department issued handcuffs.

“The Sheriff’s Office wants to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s something when you realize that typically there exists no more than one degree of separation between someone you know who has or has had breast cancer. So, many in our communities and within the Sheriff's Office family have been personally touched by breast cancer in some way, which is why we found it appropriate to bring forth the idea of support through the "Stroking For The Cure” campaign," said Major Lafayette Woods, Jr. with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
