Governor Mike Beebe has declared today Go Pink for the Cure Day, and the staff at PCSSD's central office, as well as many of our schools, followed his suggestion and arrived at work today dressed to support the cause. Here is the governor's official declaration:

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME - GREETINGS:

WHEREAS: The Pink Ribbon reminds us that breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer and the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. However, when breast cancer is detected in its earliest stages, there can be a 95 percent survival rate; and

WHEREAS: According to the Arkansas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one-in-three counties in Arkansas does not have a fixed mammography facility, and this creates a barrier for many women to easily access mammography, thereby possibly increasing their mortality rate; and

WHEREAS: It is estimated that in the United States, 201,647 women and 2,610 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer during 2014, and approximately 43,982 women and 675 men will die of the disease. In Arkansas this year, an estimated 2,934 new cases will be detected and will result in 624 deaths; and

WHEREAS: October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Arkansas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is designating October 3rd as “Go Pink for the Cure Day” to bring about awareness of the importance of mammography and to renew its commitment to removing obstacles that prevent women from seeking mammograms;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MIKE BEEBE, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby proclaim October 3, 2014, as:

GO PINK FOR THE CURE DAY

across the State of Arkansas, and I urge all my fellow citizens to join me in helping to promote efforts for the prevention and treatment of this deadly disease.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas to be affixed this 7th day of July, in the year of our Lord 2014.
