ICVR King Team Pine Bluff Youth making positive impact

PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration, Inc [ICVR] King Team will travel to Saint Louis Missouri this weekend July 24-25, 2011 to represent Arkansas in the National Youth PEN OR PENCIL Drop In Summit.

"This is huge for the youth and city of Pine Bluff," says Rev. Jesse Turner, ICVR. "The kids have really worked hard in preparation to represent this city during the competition in Saint Louis. The White House has selected the PEN OR PENCIL summit for inclusion in its youth roundtable series and will have representation present at the summit on Monday, July 25."

Pine Bluff ICVR serves as lead Arkansas affiliate and is a national PEN OR PENCIL demonstration site.

Grades 6-9 from Pine Bluff and Watson Chapel School Districts are Southeast, Coleman, and Belair Middle Schools and Pine Bluff High School will compete with other youth on a national scale.

THV Summer Cereal Drive breaks record

THV Summer Cereal Drive breaks record

LITTLE ROCK, (KTHV) — A total of 212,873 boxes of cereal were donated to the Arkansas Foodbank in the 2011 Today’s THV Summer Cereal Drive, surpassing the record set last year of 195,876.

In the 11 years that Tom Brannon has hosted the cereal drive on his “THV This Morning” show on Channel 11, more than 1 million boxes of cereal have been donated to the Foodbank.

The cereal is being distributed to hungry families in Arkansas through food pantries in the Arkansas Foodbank’s 33-county service area.

Brannon announced the results on the morning show today.

In the competitive Business Division, Southwest Power Pool, a company that manages the electrical grid in nine southwestern states, won the overall award with a total of 24,868 boxes of cereal donated to the Foodbank.

Results for the three divisions were as follows:

  • School division: 26,351 boxes
  • Business division: 124,832
  • Community division: 61

ICVR Respect for Life initiative

ICVR Respect for Life initiative

The Interested Citizens for Voter Registration, Inc. [ICVR] Respect for Life Initiative will hold a joint press conference with Pine Bluff's Muhammad Study Group of the Nation of Islam on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 2 p.m.

The press conference is called as a result of the recent homicides combine with a wave of violent shootings in the city. The event will be held at 1314 South Cherry Street in Pine Bluff. Details 870-536-7274. 

Honoring fallen riders

Honoring fallen riders

PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- The Arkansas Fallen Riders Association in Jefferson County would like to extend an invitation to our fellow riders in the surrounding counties to join us on Saturday, July 2, for a biker’s Memorial service. AFRA will host a memorial service for five of our fellow riders who passed away during the last six months. The service will be held in the Watson Chapel Baptist Church Christian Life Center, 5514 Pinnacle Lane, Pine Bluff. 

We will honor these riders and pay our respects to the families in attendance. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m.  We will start serving our monthly breakfast at 9:15 a.m. The memorial service will start at 10:10a.m.

We will meet the fallen riders through their families during this ceremony. Afterward, we will have our memorial ride to Cedar Branch Cemetery in Grant County where our Memorial Cross and Stone are placed. We will have a ceremony by the memorial and place the names of all five on the Memorial Cross.
