Camden Conference Rising Asia Series in Blue Hill

Camden Conference - This four session discussion series is a component of the Camden Conference community events program, in anticipation of the 24th annual Camden Conference, “The Challenges of Asia,” 18-20 February 2011 in Camden. It is designed to prepare participants to achieve optimal benefit from participation in the February 2011 conference.

The Camden Conference is proud to announce its newest satellite venue – The Grand in Ellsworth!

It is widely accepted that Asia is on the rise, economically, politically and militarily, with China in the lead.

Camden Public Library - Joshua Curry, a college student at Principia, spent last summer exploring Mongolia. He returned with a slide talk to share. “We spent time in the capital city of Ulanbaatar, the Gobi desert, Ikh Nart Nature preserve, and the Altai mountains. From hot dry deserts to humid hot cities, to cold mountains, we tasted extremely diverse conditions,” he explained. The talk is Thursday evening, December 30, at 6:30 pm.

Camden Conference - Join a discussion group on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 am to 11:30 am for some free-wheeling conversation covering a multitude of topics. Every 4th Tuesday, Peter Muth joins facilitator Bill Newman for a discussion of globalization.

This ongoing discussion group has continued to thrive for four years. A core group of a dozen or so sometimes swells to eighteen or more individuals who drop in for some free-wheeling conversation covering a multitude of topics. Politics, government, public policy, and current events are usually the focus. Open at no cost to CSC members. New members welcome.

Facilitator William Newman holds a BA from Brooklyn College and an MLS from Columbia University. He continued graduate study in philosophy and history at the New School for Social Research and at Cornell University. Before retiring, Bill was a librarian at various universities in the U.S. and Canada.

UAPB Rural Life Conference registration available

The 55th annual Rural Life Conference will be held on Friday, Feb. 18 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. The theme is “Building Healthy Communities by Sustaining Rural Life.” Sponsored by the UAPB School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences, the event features 10 workshops. Dr. Sherece Y. West, president and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, is the morning speaker and Dr. Cathie Woteki, under-secretary for USDA’s Research, Education and Economics, is the luncheon speaker.

Preregistration is requested of everyone even though the conference is free to producers, homemakers and retirees.

Camden Public Library - The bold and colorful art of Clarity adorns the Picker Room for the month of December. Clarity is the art team of Robert & Su.Sane Hake. Their exhibit, called “The Coming of Fairies,” is on display now. They say, “‘The Coming of Fairies’ is a show that puts you in the presence of the unseen world, of what the world now needs in its return to the magical and the unknown language of our desires. We dream, we hope, we come to ourselves in this time of Christmas, and the layered findings of sacred reaches out to our hearts.” More...
