Update: Roommate speaks about S.W.A.T. standoff that killed 107-year-old

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV)- The roommate of Monroe Isadore, the 107-year-old man killed in a shootout with authorities, told THV 11 the man's anger led to a confrontation with the Pine Bluff Police S.W.A.T. team.

"He was very angry. He got hostile. He was gonna kill somebody," said Pauline Lewis, who invited Isadore to live in her Pine Bluff home in August. Lewis was staying with family in Little Rock Sunday, when THV 11 talked with her, while friends cleaned bullets and broken glass out of her house. "Monroe was in the room and he had the gun and he said 'If you wanna live you better get away from this door.'"

Lewis told THV the incident began when she and Isadore's daughter approached him about moving to a new apartment in Pine Bluff. She said that's when he pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot anyone who got close to his bedroom door.

Once Lewis called Pine Bluff Police they dispatched the S.W.A.T.team to her home and made contact with Isadore, who they say was holed up in the back of the house. After multiple attempts to negotiate and disarm the man with teargas, Isadore fired shots at the officers who broke into the bedroom and returned fire, according to a Pine Bluff Police statement.

"It was a lot. I can't even count on my hands," a witness told THV about the number of rounds fired. Another witness recalled hearing "at least thirty rounds fired." When THV asked Lewis if she thought police were justified in their actions she said, "I think they didn't have a choice but to shoot him after they had put the teargas in and everything. He refused and he shot first."

Isadore's body was taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab Saturday evening. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
