85-year-old shot and killed in Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - Eight days into the New Year Pine Bluff saw its first murder, and the victim was a well-loved 85-year-old business owner.

“Somebody shot him in the head,” said Carlton Buie nearly busting into tears as he recalled answering the disturbing phone call from his sister early Friday morning. He continued, “She couldn’t hardly get it out. She said, 'I think we done lost our daddy. I swear.'”

It happened in the 3200 block of Port Road near a busy Union Pacific railroad just feet away from Old Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Police said Lenon Buie was found shot to death behind his own business, Buie’s Grocery store.

THV11 recently learned that the personal items belonging to the victim are missing, leading investigators to believe robbery is a likely motive.

Buie said, “I think it was a young kid did it, trying to rob him. They got… his gold watch was gone, his bill fold and all the money he had in his pocket except for 85 cents.”

Police released a photo of the clothing they believe was worn by the suspect during the murder in hopes of that it will help lead them to the person responsible. Buie’s daughter, Gwendolyn Peebles said, “He was well loved, and he’s going to be surely missed. We loved my dad. I don’t know what I’m going to do. We don’t know what we’re going to do.”
